The 133t project is an initiative formed by TRR, iMOD and Yellow Llama back in January 2009. It was born out of disappointment and frustration when the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) launched their elections website. View the screenshot below for the original website.
This site had an estimated cost of R3 million. R3 million? Government misspending at its finest. As an example of how much cheaper and better it could be done, TRR came up with a design (See at the top of this post) a day later. Just a day later and you would be hard pressed to find anyone who thinks the IEC design looks better. This situation inspired the founding of the 133t project, a coalition of IT professionals in South Africa who have decided to make themselves available to the Government in order to improve our national IT capabilities. The 133t Project manifest explains the hopes and beliefs of the 133t Project.
The IEC site has since been redesigned, and does look better. Nothing has been heard in response, however, to the 133t Project offering. Which, unfortunately, doesn’t surprise us. Nevertheless, the project is still out there, the offer still stands.
